Historical Importance of Kumbh Mela
The Kumbh Mela that we celebrate at Prayagraj is equally auspicious as that of the rest of the other 3 destinations of the Kumbh Mela. It’s also the place that has received a drop of nectar. Therefore, it has the presence of almighty Lords, and their divine blessings. According to various sculptures, after the completion of the Samudra Manthan, and falling of the drop of nectar, this place became the holy Kumbh destination.
During the Samundra Manthan, a pot of Nectar came out from the Samudra. As per promise, the nectar was to be divided equally between Gods and demons. But, since Devatas were aware that sharing the Nectar with Demons may destroy the creation cycle, and therefore, they decided not to allow the demons to drink the Nectar. After the war that ran for around 12 years, gods won finally with the help of lord Visnu, and they all drank the Nectar.
When the battle was going on, Garuda Dev was flying with the nectar pot, and in between the process, a drop of Nectar falls here at Prayagraj. From the time right then, this place became popular as one of the holiest Hindu pilgrimage places.
